Spring Prep to Prevent Termite Infestations

Termite swarming season usually begins in early March and lasts through June, following the warm weather as it moves northward. Follow these tips to prevent termite infestations:

• Inspect your home’s perimeter for rotting wood, mud tubes or other visible signs of termites. Pay close attention to doors and windowsills, where there may be shed termite wings.
  
  
• Grade the soil around your foundation so it carries water away from the house. Another way to avoid water accumulation around your foundation is to divert water with downspouts and gutters. Termites love moisture.
  
  
• Cutting down a tree? Don’t leave those old tree stumps in the yard. Dead trees are almost as desirable as your home to termites.
  
  
• Avoid piling thick mulch around your home’s foundation. Insects, and termites specifically, are drawn to the moist environment.
  
  
• Do not stack firewood or lumber against the home. Keep it at least five feet away from your home’s foundation. You’ll also want to carefully inspect firewood before bringing it indoors.
